Family with moving boxesYour new house from Hartz Homes is ready…and it’s beautiful!  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to “snap” your fingers to have all your belongings magically appear at your new place? We’ll, that’s probably not going to happen. So, here’s the next best thing: use these 5 tips to make the move as easy as possible.

  1. Decide what items you will need FIRST and pack them in a clear plastic container. This way you can see what’s inside and be able to retrieve what you need quickly. This includes things like a box cutter, paper towels, trash bags, eating utensils, select cookware, power strips, phone chargers, toilet paper, and tools.
  1. Have a good labeling system for your boxes. It’s a good idea to number your boxes and then make a corresponding list of what is in each box. The numbering system helps you track the boxes and you’ll know if you are missing one and which one. And, by not listing the contents on the boxes, you won’t be drawing attention to valuables. It is a good idea, too, to mark the boxes according to which room they are going to. Consider using a color code for each room. For example, place a colored piece of tape on all boxes going into a  certain room and place a piece of tape of the same color on the   room’s door.Remember to label the side not the box, not the top. This way you   can see the label, even if the boxes are stacked.
  1. Keep sandwich bags handy. They are great for holding any small parts of things that are taken apart, like beds, curtain rods, or mounted flat-screen TVs. Tape the sandwich bags to the items they correspond to. This also works well for the cords for your electronics. As a side note, take a picture of all the items, especially the electronic cords, before you take them apart. This will help you put them back together in your new home.
  1. Pack an overnight bag containing all the essentials. Chances are, you’ll be too tired to unpack your things. You’ll want your essentials within easy access, including a change of clothes if you’re going back to work the next day, as well as all your toiletries.
  1. Remember to defrost your refrigerator. Do this a least a day before moving. This can avoid bringing a wet mess into your new kitchen.
