At Hartz Homes we see that many of our buyers are creating hobby and craft rooms. They are converting spare bedrooms, dens, and basement spaces. If you plan on joining the trend, here are five ideas on setting up a hobby room and keeping it organized.

  1. Store Frequently Used Items in Plain Sight

Keep frequently used supplies in plastic boxes or open containers close to your work area and in plain sight. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to complete a project and having to stop what you are doing to look for a pair of scissors or that elusive glue gun.

  1. Make a Place for Everything

Assign special places for all your papers, craft tools, ribbons, etc. Organize your supplies according to the type of craft they are used for––sewing supplies in one place and painting supplies in another. When you use your craft supplies, always make sure you return them to their assigned spots right away.

Do not let things pile up. If you store craft supplies in closed boxes or drawers, label them so you don’t forget what you put inside. It is much faster to check the outside of marked storage boxes, rather than pulling boxes down from a shelf, opening them, and looking inside.

  1. Establish Your Central Command Area

A good rule is to establish a central work area––in a hobby room, a desk or table works well. This area should be the only place where you get your projects done. Don’t spread your projects all over the house. Clutter makes it that much harder to concentrate on your project. It’s also much easier to stay organized when you keep your supplies in one room.

  1. Let Go of Unnecessary Things

Don’t be a hoarder. If you have held on to something for more than two years and have never used it, it is time to get rid of it. Throw it away, give it away, or sell it. Hobby room organization is a lot easier if you pare down to the essentials.

  1. Make a Manageable To-Do List

If your hobby room gets so disorganized that cleaning it feels impossible, make a to-do list with three items a day until the room is completely clean. Play a little game with yourself and make these tasks non-negotiable. You will be surprised at how much you can get done using this approach.
